Migraine

Posted by Optivida Health on

A migraine is a type of vascular headache of varying intensity and is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. More than 3 million people suffer with migraines.

There are many theories as to what triggers a migraine, including hormonal changes in women, stress, caffeinated or alcoholic drinks, food additives, sensory stimuli and food sensitivities.

One compelling theory suggests that the major cause is dysregulation in the ECS. Scientists have observed several ECS mechanisms that may have an implication in migraine attacks.

Perhaps the clearest indication of endocannabinoid dysfunction contributing to migraines is a 2007 study at the University of Perugia and published in the Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology. Researchers measured endocannabinoid levels in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with chronic migraines, finding significantly lower amounts of the cannabinoid anandamide, concluding that this “may reflect an impairment of the endocannabinoid system in these patients, which may contribute to chronic head pain.”

Research has proven that Hemp Extract brings balance to the ECS. Dr. Ethan Russ, a pioneering scientist in the endocannabinoid field, has postulated that “cannabidiol is an endocannabinoid modulator; in other words, when given chronically it actually increases the gain of the system.... So, if there’s too much activity in a system, homeostasis requires that it be brought back down. If there’s too little, it’s got to come up. And that’s what cannabidiol can do as a promoter of endocannabinoid tone.”

Thus, increasing the body’s level of natural cannabinoids by using Hemp Extract can reduce or even resolve the occurrence of migraines. In addition, Hemp Extract may also reduce the severity of a migraine attack.

You can apply a topical Hemp Extract to the area of the head and neck that is experiencing pain as well as using an oral Hemp Extract to increase endocannabinoid tone.
